We long for summer to go to the beach but there is something refreshing about being by the sea at any time of the year! Our favourite beach is Murvagh which is 25 km from the cottage on the west coast of Ireland in Donegal. It is a long beach and often has only a handful of people on it at any one time. Parking is easy and access across the sand dunes is facilitated by a board walk at one end beside the car park and portable toilet. In other places it’s a climb up and run down which is fun in itself! The water is shallow for quite a distance out but there is a deeper channel running parallel to the water when the tide is in. A woodland behind the car park offers nice walks too. There are no shops here so come prepared!
Another beach we love is Rossnowlagh, also in Donegal, only 25 minutes drive from Shamrock Cottage, Kesh. This is a beach you can drive on and if you walk too far from the car when the tide is coming in, then your car could become part of it. A few succumb each year (check out youtube). The Smugglers cove is a super restaurant with outstanding views over the area and a reputation of its own for many years now. The Sand House Hotel faces the beach and there are caravan parks alongside too. A small shop has basic supplies and an ice-cream shop brings joy regardless of the weather!
Finally, Fintra is one you could just drive past. It’s off the Killybegs to Slieve League road with a steep hill descending to the beach. A lovely walk and you’re not that far from Killybegs if you need some food and drink!
Get some fresh sea air and blow away the cobwebs – winter or summer!
